INVENTORY of architecture initiatives in Europe
The first version of the European ITS
Framework Architecture (KAREN) was completed in 2000. Since then, a growing
number of countries in Europe have used it as a basis for
their own ITS architectures. In France (the ACTIF project) and Italy (ARTIST) have
already developed national architectures; and work is proceeding in the Czech Republic
(TEAM) and Austria (TTS-A).
Further countries, among them Spain, Hungary,
Slovenia, Slovakia, Croatia and Romania, as well as Sweden and the UK, are
at present considering the creation of
national architectures and have been in close liaison with the FRAME projects.
Several other countries which had
started work on national architectures before KAREN was complete, including for example TelemArk
in Finland,
are now adopting a convergence policy in relation to the Framework
Architecture.
The following diagram shows the major national ITS architecture developments in Europe. A detailed review of the status
until 2004 of architecture work initiatives
in 14 countries can be found in the
INVENTORY.

The main advantage of developing your own ITS
architecture - at the national, regional, city or sectoral level -
is that it will reflect your specific needs (and can also be in your own language).
Being tailored for the local environment, it will develeop in detail
the aspects and policies
considered important.
Using the European ITS Framework Architecture as a basis for your
architecture will give you a head start. It can greatly reduce the development time and
ensure that, though reflecting your specific choices, needs
and circumstances, your architecture will still be compatible with your neighbours,
and all the other European countries which have also derived their
architecture from the Framework Architecture.
If you decide to develop a national ITS architecture, FRAME experts can give assistance in a number
of ways:
- organising a training seminar to clarify the case for ITS architectures
- running a Workshop for technical experts with a local
Case Study
- giving technical advice
- presentations in international meetings where you can meet other
architecture developers.
Below are some examples of
architectures developed with support from FRAME.

listed below are among those which have established close relations
with the FRAME projects and are now actively endorsing the European Framework
Architecture.

Italian national ITS architecture: "ARTIST"
The ARTIST project was officially launched on 11th March 2003 in Rome.
ARTIST, which used the European ITS Framework Architecture
as a basis, took just sixteen months to produce. It has given
particular attention to intermodality and has developed an
Organisational Architecture. It will soon be entering a second phase of
development in which it intends to publish a European tender for a
methodology for Training Courses and adaptation of ARTIST to the new
versions of FRAME.

An
INVENTORY of national ITS architectures initiatives was compiled as part of
the FRAME-NET project. It provides a summary of work on national architectures
in progress or planned in 14 European countries.
